About us

At Dance in the Rain Gardening, we believe in the power of nature to transform spaces and enrich lives. Founded in 2022 as a project for Humber College's Horticulture Technician Apprenticeship Program, our company grew from a passion for connecting people and plants.

Our company is owned and operated by red seal horticulturalist James Boutilier who got his start in horticulture 15 years ago while a student at the University of Toronto Mississauga where he studied plant biology and ecology. While a student James grew his passion for gardening by founding a campus community garden and planting thousands of trees and shrubs as a member of the campus's naturalization steering committee. This led him to facilitating larger community gardens and projects in the urban agriculture and community food security space for charities such as The Stop Community Food Centre, Meal Exchange, and Stonegate Community Health Centre before he developed a passion for more ornamental work. In the more recent past before founding Dance in the Rain, James worked as the Nursery Supervisor for Sheridan Nurseries Toronto where he sourced millions of dollars of nursery stock for the diverse and high-end Toronto market, and he worked as a maintence team leader for the award-winning Toronto landscape company Christine’s Touch Gardening where he maintained high end properties both on the ground and in the sky (condos)

Origin of the Name:

Why “Dance in The Rain”?

Dance in the Rain Gardening is named in memory of James Boutilier’s younger brother, Michael.

Michael was a two-time cancer survivor. He was first diagnosed with leukemia at eighteen and overcame it with chemotherapy. After a relapse, he confronted the disease again and survived a bone marrow transplant. When cancer returned a third time, he was told it was terminal.

Even then, Michael kept living.

Much of Michael’s life was shaped by hospitals, treatments, and long stretches of uncertainty, yet he remained deeply engaged with the world around him. He valued time with friends, simple routines, board games, laughter, and moments of connection. He did not put his life on hold while waiting for circumstances to improve.

Tragically, Michael was not taken by cancer. He was killed at age twenty-four by an impaired driver while driving home after an evening spent playing board games with friends.

At his eulogy, James shared the quote, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” It captures how Michael lived. Despite illness and uncertainty, he found ways to live meaningfully and joyfully. He learned how to dance in the rain.

That lesson stayed.

Gardens reflect this truth every day. They are shaped by weather, stress, attention, and time. They are imperfect, vulnerable, and resilient all at once. Good gardening is not about forcing outcomes, but about showing up consistently, paying attention, and responding with care.

The name Dance in the Rain is a reminder that life, like gardening, does not wait for ideal conditions. What matters is how we show up within it.

That belief continues to guide how we work. We focus on thoughtful garden care, long-term plant health, and ensuring gardens are experienced and enjoyed, season after season.
